So, I decided to try it at home. After researching several recipes on the food network, they all seemed about the same...pizza dough in a cat-iron skillet or deep dish pizza pan, crushed tomatoes for a sauce, and cheese on the bottom. I decided that I could easily make-up my own, with my own choice of ingredients.
We choose pepperoni and spinach since we had both on-hand and I love sneaking in veggies where ever I can!.
ChicagoStyle Deep Dish Pizza
Ingredients:
Pizza Dough ( I used this recipe )
8 oz Pepperoni, sliced
10 oz box of frozen chopped spinach, squeezed dry
1/2 lbs mozzerella cheese, grated
28 oz can crushed tomatoes
Italian Seasoning, minced garlic, salt, pepper
Directions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
- Roll dough into a thick round circle to fit into a well-oiled cast iron skillet. Drape it over the skillet and work the dough into the sides. Trim any excess dough by rolling a rolling pin over the edges of the skillet.
- Season the crushed tomatoes with Italian Seasoning, garlic, salt and pepper to taste.
- Layer ingredients on top of the dough in the following order: Cheese, pepperoni, spinach, followed by the sauce.
- Bake at 375 for 25-30 minutes or until the side crust is golden brown. I covered the crust with a foil tent to prevent the edges from burning.
So you just happened to have a cast iron skillet laying around???? Amazing I have not used one of those in years. Thanks for the tips about chicago pizza, cheese on the bottom and crushed tomatoes.
ReplyDeleteYeah...believe it or not we had put one on our wedding regristry! David LaBan was kind enough to send it to us. We use it quite often for roasting chicken, browning, and now pizza!
ReplyDeleteYum! Funny, last week on my food blog I posted BBQ chicken pizza and chicago deep dish pizza as well. We must have been on the same food plane! I made my deep dish in a spring form pan- it worked GREAT! I found your blog on blogroll, mine is straightupgoodfood.blogspot.com
